Edmund Daumit, of Monessen, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2017. He was the son and youngest child or Alexander and Haseba Daumit, was a graduate of Monessen High School, and attended Penn State University. He was called for duty after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He trained in radio school in Oklahoma and was sent to the European Theatre with the XXIX Tactical Air Command. Stationed in England, Edmund rose to the position of staff sargent and was in charge of the procurement of supplies for many companies. He landed at Normandy on D-Day and fought through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, where he witnessed the atrocities Hitler inflicted on the Jews and other nationalities. For a brief time he was under the direct command of General George S. Patton, directing air fire to destroy German tanks. When the war in Europe was over, his company was headed to the South Pacific when an announcement was made that the atomic bomb was dropped and the war was officially over; on his birthday, Aug. 14. After the war he worked for Pittsburgh Steel Company but had dreams of being a business owner. After much sacrifice and saving, he opened his first jewelry store and the people of the Valley thoroughly supported him. He went into opening two more locations in Monessen and two in Charleroi. He ventured into opening mall locations by first opening in Century III Mall, followed by stores in the Uniontown Mall and Meaowbrook Mall in West Virginia. He attributed his success to giving the best service to all his customers. When he retired in 2000 after 51 years, he had served at least three generations of families. He had been a member of the Pennsylvania Jewelers Association and served on their Board of Directors and was a member of the National Jewelry Association.
