Viewing/Service:Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Rhome Funeral Home, Inc., 1209 Grand Blvd., Monessen.
A memorial celebration of Jennie’s life will be held in Monessen later in the summer, time and place to be announced.
Any memorial contributions in Jennie’s memory should be directed to the Monessen Public Library and District Center, 326 Donner Avenue, Monessen, PA.
Obituary:
Jennie Melissas, 86, formerly of Monessen, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at The Residence At Hilltop, Carroll Twp.
She was born September 5, 1928 in Monessen, a daughter of the late Stephen and Irene Kontras Melissas. Miss Melissas was a graduate of Monessen High School with the Class of 1948
and the California Teachers College with the Class of 1966. Jennie never lost her love of learning. She later attended classes at the University of Pittsburgh, working toward a master’s degree in geology. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, and the PA. Education Association.
Jennie taught Science in the City of Monessen School District for
numerous years. After her retirement in 1993, she worked as a volunteer with several local organizations, including The Monessen Public Library, Meals on Wheels, and the Retired Teachers Association. During her life she traveled the world extensively, visiting Hawaii, the Middle East, and many countries in Europe. She loved to cook Greek food for her extended family and friends. Jennie was a staunch Steelers fan who understood the details of a good defense.
She was preceded in death by her sister Mary Pagonis and three of her four brothers, Michael, James, and Nicholas Melissas.
She is survived by her brother August Melissas of Atlanta, GA and her nieces Irene Pagonis, of Pittsburgh, and Katherine (husband Dennis) Drew of Hyattsville,MD, who were her caregivers. She is also survived by numerous other nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and great nephews.
