Friends will be welcomed on  Thursday, November 1, 2018, from  10:00 am - 12:00 pm, the time of services,  at the at the Rhome Funeral Home, Inc.,1209 Grand Blvd.  Monessen, 724-684-4061

 

 

Interment will follow at the Beth Shalom Cemetery, 1501 Anderson Road, Shaler Twp PA 15209.Contributions may be made to the Monessen Public Library or the charity of one's choosing in Ferne's memory. 

 

 

Obituary:

Ferne C. Borof Shire, 83 of Monessen, , passed away peacefully at home on Monday October 29, 2018 . She was born in Monessen to Morris and Etta Borof on September 6, 1935. Her father had owned "Borof's Jewelry Store" in the 400 block of Schoonmaker Ave, and the Borofs lived above the store.  Ferne graduated with the still-dynamic Monessen High School Class of 1953.  Ferne attended Penn State and graduated from Claifornia State Teachers College in 1957.  She had taught in the Monessen Public Schools. .Ferne married Bernard Shire in 1956.  They were the first couple married in Temple Beth Am, in Monessen, which had opened in 1954.  This year, they celebrated 62 years of marriage.  Ferne and Bernard were the parents of three sons- Mark, Stuart, and Joel.  Ferne was a member of Temple Beth Am and an officer in its Sisterhood.  She was a member of the Monessen Junior Women's Club, and had volunteered for the past 25 years with the Mon Valley Hospital Auxiliary Ferne was predeceased by her sons- Stuart, formerly of San Francisco, and Joel, formerly of Los Angeles.She is survived by her husband- Bernard, son and daughter in law, Mark and Gerrie Shire of Monessen.  Step grandson-  Bob Grounds (Meghan) and step great granddaughter- Taylor, of Roswell GA.  A Brother- Irwin Borof and wife Linda of Montrose, Colorado and nephews and a niece.  The Shire family is grateful for the wonderful care Ferne received from Lisa Beatty, Lisa Metts, Nicole MArtin, and Victoria Howell.
