Viewing: Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Rhome Funeral Home Inc., family owned and operated as a member of the Golden Rule, 1209 Grand Blvd. Monessen PA, where friends will be welcomed from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13.
Services: A Triason Service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox, Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Joseph DiStefano officiating.
Entombment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery Mausoleum of Monessen.
Contributions may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Mr. Mermigas' name through the funeral home.
Obituary:
Theodore Mermigas, 88 , of Monessen,passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013 in Good Samaritan Hospice House.of Wexford. He was born September 3, 1924 in Monessen , a son of the late John and Argiro Vavaka Mermigas. He was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Monessen and the Church Choir. He was also a member of the Monessen Lions, Monessen American Legion Post #28, and AHEPA. Mr. Mermigas was avid St. Louis Cardinale fan, and greatly admired the late Stan Musial. Mr. Mermigas was a Navy veteran of WWII having entered the service in 1943 in Great Lakes. From there he went to Radio School, and had served on the
USS Van Valkenburg, a destroyer, DD653. His service awards include two Battle Stars, earned from serving during Iwo Jima and Okanowa. Mr. Mermigas had been employed by Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Monessen Plant, prior to his retirement.
Surviving are Wife, Mary Kalamaras Mermigas, Three sons- John and wife Stephanie Mermigas,of Rigby, ID, Dr. Michael E. Mermigas, of North Huntingdon, and James and wife Judith Mermigas,of Wexford. Eight grandchildren- Eleni, Melina, Arianna, Alexa, Ted, Christopher, John Michael, and Niko Mermigas. His sister-Katherine Mermigas, and sister in law- Smara Mermigas. Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Brother- George "Corky" Mermigas.
